On Sunday, Feb 26th, the community of sherpa ‘Sherpa Nangpi Chokpa’ organized the 2150th Gyalpo Losar event, which started with religious prayers by Lamas Gurus.
Nima Sherpa, the secretary of the organization, gave an overview of its history, objectives, and present and future projects. He highlighted that members had pledged to donate $155K to construct a Sherpa Gumwa in Colorado.
At the Losar cultural festival, a Sebru dance program was conducted. Ngawang Ongchu, the President, thanked all those who had supported the event which concluded with a fun dancing session. Ongchu also mentioned that a few months ago, Governor Jared Polis declared that the Colorado State Government will annually designate January 5 as Sherpa Day.
Gyalpo Losar is an annual cultural festival celebrated by the Sherpa community on Fagun Shukla Pratipada.
This year on February 21st, the Sherpa community marked the 2150th Gyalpo Losar with a celebration to bid farewell to the Year of the Tiger and welcome the Year of the Rabbit. Gyalpo Losar is a New Year celebration that is separated into twelve categories: Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon (Cloud), Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird Dog, and Barah.
